Joseph here said that YOU recommended Bruce Cockburn to him, and that kind of cracked me up because you so rarely listen to the music that I've recommended to you over the years of our friendship . . . and it's always been special to me when you've told me that you did once or twice. Joseph just recommended The Killers who I've never heard of but am listening to now as I write this. "Them hillbilly heroin pills" in the song "West Hills" with its spare lyrics so full of beauty and despair and faith and hope that remind me of the life I observe all around me and sometimes even live here in the twilight years of my own life.

"And if there really is a judgement

When He pulls my chart

He'll reject my actions

But He will know my heart."

Oh God . . . let it be so, Lord Jesus!

Let it be so.

I hear you on being cracked up! I rarely listened because you posted sooo much. "Ain't No Grave" was worth the price though! Thank you for linking this song and quoting those lines. It's quite a song, you're right.

Oh gosh I know you observe and feel the faith and hope and beauty and despair of the people around you.

I not only observe, Katie, but also live it.

That song lyric birthed that prayer from the very core of my soul.

"Hillbilly heroin pills" . . . what a metaphor for the sin in our lives.

Our Triune God knows the highs and lows of living in a human body on this earth. He overcame totally, yet suffered in every way we ever have. This verse came to me this morning--the thoughts came later: “And they all forsook Him and fled.” Mark 15:50. The darkness could not overcome Jesus, our God in the flesh, even at His most vulnerable hour when no human was with Him and He even felt forsaken by His Father. Yet as a man feeling totally alone, the love in His heart for His Father was stronger than death. Right there, in His most vulnerable moment, Jesus, the Light of the world, overcame the greatest darkness by the Love of God, the Three in One. The great miracle: because He overcame there, He now lives in me, in us, to overcome by His love, and gives the courage to stand whenever I (we) feel alone.

Thank you for sharing this insight. “The love in His heart for his father was stronger than death.”’ So helpful.

You recommended Bruce Cockburn to me some time ago. If you’ve never heard The Killer’s album, The Pressure Machine, I love it and recommend it.

Beautiful as always. “The jeweler’s velvet, pearls and diamonds laid out” — what a gorgeous description.
